We believe in putting
Palmetto State communities on the map
Meet Abbey
"We are excited to introduce the SC Trail Towns Programs to communities across the state. This program is designed not only to market existing outdoor recreation opportunities, but also to help communities reach their outdoor recreation goals. We are one of only three statewide Trail Town Programs in the country, and SC is primed and ready for it!"
— Abbey Crocker, VP of the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor & Trail Towns Director
The South Carolina Trail Towns Project is a program of the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor. The purpose of the Trail Towns Program is to highlight communities that excel in outdoor recreation and provide a well-rounded approach to traveling outdoor enthusiasts. A named Trail Town can be sure to provide amenities for any outdoor traveler, whether you are new to recreation opportunities or are a well-seasoned explorer.
For communities looking to expand their recreation opportunities, the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor offers assistance and marketing ideas to gain the Trail Town Certification.
What Sets Us Apart
SC Trail Towns isn’t just a designation — it’s a partnership.
What makes this program different is our focus on long-term impact, authentic storytelling, and community-driven growth. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all models. Every South Carolina community has its own history, landscape, and character — and we work to highlight what makes each place unique.
Unlike simple tourism campaigns, SC Trail Towns connects outdoor recreation with economic development, conservation, cultural heritage, and quality of life. We help communities align around a shared vision — where trails support local businesses, downtown vitality, and sustainable growth.
Community-Led, Not Cookie-Cutter
Every Trail Town is different — and we keep it that way. We work alongside local leaders, businesses, and residents to build on what already makes a community special. We don’t apply a generic model; we elevate local character, culture, and outdoor assets to create a strategy that fits your town.
Trails as Economic Drivers
We see trails as more than recreation — they are engines for economic growth. By connecting communities to established trail systems, we help increase visitation, strengthen small businesses, enhance downtown vitality, and position outdoor recreation as a long-term investment in local prosperity.
Conservation Meets Smart Growth
SC Trail Towns bridges the gap between tourism, conservation, and planning. Our approach encourages responsible development, environmental stewardship, and infrastructure improvements that support both residents and visitors — ensuring growth that protects what makes South Carolina special.
